Dear CADA members, I
would like to provide the following two messages:
(1) Summary of the 3rd CADA annual meeting:
On behave of the second CADA board members (Feng
Liu, Jianping Ye,
Zhongmin Ma, Zhenqi Liu, Cuihua Zhang, and myself),
we are pleased to
summarize our third CADA academic meeting at New
Orleans, June 4 and
June 5, 2009. Under the leadership of Jianping (the
2nd President of
CADA), we have had a very successful meeting this
year with the
following features: (1) We have the largest meeting
this year in terms
of meeting program, attendance and conference room.
The program was one
and half day (it was two half day meeting before).
We have 24
representatives of CADA and CDS in the meeting. The
conference room in
the Children’s Hospital can hold more than 100
people and with excellent
equipment. (2) We have 3 representatives from CDS
(Chinese Diabetes
Society). They are Drs. Yang Wenying, Zhou
Zhiguang, and Zeng LongYi.
Although Dr. Weng Jianping could not attend this
meeting, he has sent a
message to several members of us to express his
support of, and
congratulation to, this meeting (see attached email
from him). Both Dr.
Yang and Dr. Zhou made presentations; (3) The
presentations by the CADA
members covered a very wide field in science,
including type 1 and type
2 diabetes, insulin and adiponectin signaling,
transcriptional factors,
inflammatory cytokines and cardiovascular
complications, and potential
new drugs for diabetes and its complications; (4)
We have a very
exciting and informative discussion during the
lunch and dinner time in
terms of the hot topics in the near future of
diabetic research; and (5)
Three CADA members were nominated as candidates for
the 3rd CADA board
members, and Ji Li was elected to be the new board
member as a
treasurer. Dr. Lu Cai has been elected as the third
CADA president.
After the annual meeting, several CADA board
members (Feng Liu, Jianping
Ye, Zhongmin Ma, Lu Cai and Ji Li) had a dinner
with two CDS members
(Drs. Jia Weiping and Zhou Zhiquang) and discussed
the future
collaboration between CADA and CDS, particularly
for the 2009 CDS annual
meeting (will be held in ZhengZhou, at the first
weekend of November
2009). Therefore, we have had a very successful
meeting this year. (5)
We arranged a visit of the Pennington Biomedical
Research Center, where
Jianping Ye studies insulin resistance.
Congratulation!!!!
With the success, we appreciate the effort of our
CADA member Yeqi Liu
who arranged the conference room for this meeting
in the Children
Hospital auditorium with free of charge. He also
provided a lot of
information support. We are grateful to the
contribution from Cuihua
Zhang who took care of registration, meals and
transportation in the
meeting. We also thank Zhongmin Ma who prepared the
meeting program and
updates. All of the meeting activities provided
excellent opportunities
to the CADA members and the CDS representatives to
interact each other.
Here, we highly appreciate the meeting attendants
who provided financial
support to the meeting with the registration fee or
spent time in the
organization of activities, which makes the meeting
possible and
successful.
The third CADA board is formed by following
members:
Lu Cai, President,
Zhongmin Ma, Vice President,
Zhenqi Liu, Secretory,
Cuihua Zhang, Membership Director
Ji Li, Treasurer.
We believe that CADA will continue to grow under
the leadership of the
third board. We have been and will continue to
appreciate input from
every member. Hope to see all of you at next
get-together dinner meeting
or academic annual meeting.
Lu Cai, the 3rd CADA President
Jianping Ye, the 2nd CADA President
(2) Speech from the president
It has been a great honor for me to serve as the
3rd President of the
Chinese American Diabetes Association (CADA) for
the next two years
(June 2009 to May 2011). As a board member since
its formal inception in
2004, I have witnessed the powerful growth a
nd impressive achievement of
CADA under the leadership of theYe) and Board
members. The CADA organization has grown bigger and
stronger each year, not only reflected by the
increased number of
memberships, but more by the professional and
academic accomplishments
of our members. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of
our members, especially those in the past Boards
and the current Board.
We had a very successful and exciting annual
meeting and reception in
New Orleans this year. On behalf of the new Boards,
I congratulate to
the 2009 meeting attendees for their excellent
scientific presentations.
Looking forward, there are so many challenges ahead
of us, especially
under the current financial crisis in US. I am
committed to work with
the Board members closely to continue to implement
our mission and
plans. During the 2009 meeting, the new Board has
met and defined a role
for each committee (which is posted in this issue
of Newsletter as well
as in our website. We will work together to
increase our membership; we
will develop more programs to provide better
service to our members,
such as mentorship program; we will take big steps
in our outreaching
and collaboration with professional associations,
contact research
organizations, and industries around the world,
especially in China.
Furthermore, we will keep our identity as an
internationally and
nationally recognized special interest group as
CADA. To achieve these
goals, we strongly encourage every CADA member to
be actively involved,
including the get-together dinner and academic
meeting alternatively
each year. To support these activities, we may
start to have membership
for all CADA members (to be discussed and announced
in detail later). I
am looking forward to your support and working with
you all.
CADA is a nonprofit organization and the operation
is carried out with
voluntary effort of the board members. Please reach
us with your warm
hand!

Summary
of the 2007 CADA meeting
Dear CADA Members:
Following is a summary of the 2007 CADA meeting
that is just accomplished by the second
CADA panel. We wish to report to you about the
activities and results in the
meeting.
----------------------------------------
Summary of 2007 CADA Meeting at Chicago
The second CADA meeting was held in Chicago during
June 21 and 22, 2007. The meeting was in the
Sheraton Hotel in downtown Chicago, and had 35
attendees (25 from US, and 10 from abroad including
China mainland, Hong Kong, Singapore). Twenty
peoples presented their research work. Drs. Jia
Weiping from Shanghai and Lu Jumin from Beijing who
represented the Chinese Diabetes Association
introduced diabetes research in China. The meeting
was successfully completed according to the plan.
Attendees enjoyed very much the presentations by
the CADA members and oversea visitors. They
appreciated the opportunity to meet new friends and
to spend wonderful times together. You may have
observed these in pictures that were published by
Jianhua Shao in an e-mail to everybody last week.
Following are some major points from the meeting.
Election of the second panel of CADA officials was
done. The first team of CADA officials was formed
by five members: Feng Liu (President), Jianping Ye
(Vice President), Lu Cai (Secretary), Zhongmin Ma
(Treasure), and Linda Cai (Membership). Among the
achievements completed by this first panel, several
are worth to mentioning. These include
establishment of CADA in 2004, setup of bylaw and
CADA bank account, registration of the CADA as a
non-profit organization, development of CADA
website and growth of membership to 65 people. All
officials made significant contributions to these
accomplishments. However, Feng, Lu, Minghui and
Zhenqi who provided the original idea of forming
CADA or their leadership to the first CADA panel
were very critical to the success of CADA. Here, we
express our special appreciation of their
contribution.
The election was conducted according to the CADA
bylaw, in which each term of CADA panel is two
years. The second panel is following:
Advisor
(Past President): Feng Liu, Ph.D.,
Professor, expert in insulin signaling, University
of Texas at San Antonio.
President:
Jianping Ye, M.D., Professor, expert in insulin
resistance, Louisiana State
University.
Vice
President: Lu Cai, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor, expert in Diabetic
cardiovascular complications, University of
Louisville.
Secretary:
Zhongmin Ma,
Ph.D., Associate Professor, expert in Beta-cells,
Monsanai School of Medicine.
Membership:
Zhenqi
Liu, M.D., Assistant Professor, expert in vascular
biology and diabetes complications, University of
Virginia.
Treasurer:
Cuihua
Zhang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, expert in
vascular biology, Texas A&M
University.
During the meeting, following issues are discussed.
1. Modification
of bylaw to meet the development needs of CADA,
such as defining responsibility and term length of
CADA officials, future meeting format, and
financial rules.
2. Promotion
of academic interaction among CADA members, such as
exchange of information and reagents, providing
consultancy on grant, manuscript and research.
3. Provide
more support to junior faculties in their research,
grantmenship and career development that includes
writing reference letters for promotion.
4. Continue
to collaborate with colleagues in China and other
regions.
In finance, the meeting received $5720 income from
meeting registration ($3750) and Merck donation
($2000). Cost of the meeting is $6202 including
rent of conference rooms, miscellaneous and meals.
Due to previous income from Merck’s Donation, there
are still $7349 in balance in the CADA bank account
after this meeting.
Finally, we thank Dr. Bei Zhang (at Merck) who has
been providing consistent financial support to CADA
since 2004, and Dr. Xiaojian Sun who made
arrangement for the conference room, presentation
equipments and meals.
By the second panel of CADA
July 4th, 2007.
